ACHILL ISLAND
Achill Island in County Mayo is the largest island off the coast of Ireland and is situated off the west coast. It has a population of 2,700. Its area is 148 km sq. (57 sq. miles) Achill is attached to the mainland by Michael Davitt Bridge. A bridge was first completed here in 1887 and replaced in 1949. The current structure was completed in 2008.
The highest cliffs in Europe are on Achill Island, in Mayo, Ireland, They stand at 664 metres but some claim they nearly top 700 metres. The cliffs at Slieve League in Donegal are not the highest as falsely advertised, as the stand at 595 metres (ordinance survey, 2008). The cliffs are named Croaghaun and may only be seen by boat or from the summit of the cliff. “Lonely Plannet”, “Walking in Ireland”.
